Every so often we will get to know one of BARK's amazing volunteers.
Bette and Rusti
Recent News: The Pet Post USA recognizes Bette for her services and presents her with
The Pet Post USA Volunteer Recognition Award for the month of April 2012.
Bette and her Golden Retriever, Rusti,
have been with BARK since our inception in September 2007. Bette is
originally from Minnesota and moved to California in 1970. She was
employed as a teacher and taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders. Bette is now
an in-home tutor, making her a perfect fit as a BARK team. Bette and
Rusti not only listen to the kids, she puts all her training to use and really helps them learn to read.
Bette and Keith (whom she married in
1977) are very involved in their grandkids' sports activities and
accomplishments. They have a cabin in Running Springs and enjoy traveling
throughout the United States. They even drove all the
way to Alaska in 2008.
Bette always had a dog growing up
and taught dog training at PetSmart here in Long Beach. She and
Keith got Rusti eight years ago at four months of age. Bette and
Rusti started with BARK at Bryant and Roosevelt Elementary Schools, moved
to Buffum until they closed, and now listens at Cleveland and Holmes
Elementary Schools. Rusti just loves the attention she gets from the
students and knows it's time to go to school when Bette gets out the red
When Keith and Bette were out of town
recently, Rusti went to stay with a family in the neighborhood. About
9:00 pm, Rusti was in full play with the family's dog when the mother picked up
a book and walked out of the room. Rusti immediately stopped her play and
followed mom in to help read the book to the kids before they went to sleep!
Bette also created most of the BARK
training manual. Bette says she likes being a BARK volunteer because she
can have fun with Rusti and she loves it when a student suddenly says,
"Oh, I get it!" Bette says, "Through BARK and my in-home
tutoring, I get to see first hand the students' satisfaction and
their small accomplishments. I have always believed in "small
baby steps become huge giant steps."
We are proud to have Bette and
Rusti as a BARK team!
